What Container Would Suit Your Wedding Flowers Best?

By: Nadine Visscher

Do you want to arrange the flowers for on the tables of your wedding reception?  You can do this very effectively and very economically.  You can make your own wedding flowers look very stunning with the right containers in the right location.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

The neck and size of the container is the most important.  If the neck of your vase is too wide, the flowers will just flop out without holding a nice shape.  If the neck is too narrow, the flowers will be squashed and cramped. Glass containers are great for loose, informal arrangements.  Glass containers come in all shapes and sizes - vases, bowls, water jugs, cubes, fish tanks and tiny sample whiskey bottles.  They are unique in that they don't compete with the color of the flowers and they allow you to see the stems, adding to the design.  The drawbacks with glass containers are that if the water becomes cloudy, it's very noticeable, and you need to use something transparent to support the flowers (if needed).  You can't use a pinholder or chicken wire because that would be very noticeable - and unsightly. Ceramic containers can either emphasize or contrast the color of the flowers.  You can also create very unique designs because you can use material such as floral foam or chicken wire to hold the stems in place. Metal containers can effect the mood of an arrangement.  Cool metals such as pewter and silver can give the arrangement a cool feel whereas warmer metals such as brass or copper gave a warm glow to the flowers.  Be careful with these though.  Test them ahead of time.  Sometimes the metal of the container will change the chemical composition of the water which will shorten the vase life of your flowers. Baskets give a real rustic look and they do well with informal arrangements of wild and garden flowers.  A waterproof container needs to be set inside the basket before you can arrange flower in it.  Your flowers need a water source if they are going to last.

Your containers don't need to be formal and they don't all need to match.  You can use unusual containers such as chunky kitchen storage jars or canisters, casserole dishes, teapots, wooden boxes, or even hollowed out fruit or gourds.  The sky is the limit.  When you make your own wedding flowers, you can put your personal touch on your arrangements using unique containers to create the look you want.

Are Your Wedding Flowers in Scale With Each Other?

By: Nadine Visscher

A scale is something that measures an object in comparison to something else.  A flower, leaf or container is only large or small when it is compared to something else.  The elements of a wedding bouquet or arrangement need to be in scale with each other.  The bouquet or arrangement also needs to be in scale with its environment.

We can look at scale in 4 ways

flowers in scale with their containers flowers in scale with other flowers flowers in scale with foliage a bouquet in scale with its environment

The container that you choose for your arrangement is very important because its size and shape determines which flowers you will use.  Large, dominant flowers look better in bulky containers.  Fine, delicate flowers go very well with intricate, smaller containers.

Choose Your Wedding Flowers

Your flowers need to be in scale with each other as well.  This does not mean that you can't use different sizes of flowers, but extremes should be avoided.  For example, very large, full-sized sunflowers would not look right beside a cluster of tiny, delicate lily-of-the-valley.

The flowers you choose should be in scale with your foliage.  Again, this does not rule out different sizes, but extremes are distracting.  If, for instance, you have a rose bud arranged in front of a large banana leaf, it simply won't look good.  It would not be in scale and would look completely unbalanced.

An arrangement or bouquet needs to be in scale with its environment.  Think hotel lobby and a tiny bud vase.  The flowers would not be noticed.  They would be lost in all the space.  Now think very large arrangement with numerous birds of paradise and protea squeezed into a little hospital room.  The huge design will make this small room look even smaller.  This combination simply does not make sense.

A few more tips to keep in mind are that shiny or course textured flowers, foliage and containers look larger than they are because they attract your attention.  Similarly bright, dark, and warm colors catch your eye more than dull, light, and cool colors and therefore look larger.

When you arrange your own wedding flowers, remember to keep your flowers, foliage, and containers in scale with one another.  the overall look will be much more pleasing to the eye if you do.

Are Your Wedding Flowers Dying Before You Even Use Them?

May 23, 2011 · Posted in Wedding Flower Articles · Comment

Are Your Wedding Flowers Dying Before You Even Use Them?

There might be a few bumps along the road if you decide to make your own wedding flowers.  The best way to combat these hiccups is to be informed.

If you have very carefully chosen your flowers and you have conditioned them according to directions, why then do you have some flowers that droop the morning before the wedding?  This is most likely because there are air locks in the stems which prevent the stems from drinking enough water.  This causes the flowers to wilt.  After you  have paid good money for these flowers, this would not be a welcome sight.  You'll want to revive them.

There are different ways of reviving flowers and some flowers respond differently than others, some with more success than others.  Since heat and bright light tend to shorten vase life, you will want to revive your flowers in a cool room away from any bright light.

Some flowers are more temperamental than others.  Tulips, for example, can be high maintenance and can bend and become less compact very quickly.

You can fight this by wrapping them tightly with newspaper, covering the stems and the flower heads. Place them in a deep container of cool water for 2 hours. If the petals start to open too soon, you can gently place a rubber band or tie chenille wire (pipe cleaners) around each bloom during this reviving drink.  This will gently hold the bloom to the size that you want it to be. If the stems start to droop, you can stop this by pricking each one with a pin just beneath the flower head to release trapped air.   If the stems are bent beyond repair, you can push a wire through the stem from the base, easing it carefully so that it straightens the stem along its entire length.

There are 4 other ways you can revive other flowers.

Foliage can be immersed in water for at least 2 hours.  This allows the leaves and the stems to drink.  Do not use this method with grey or silvery foliage because it can dull their color. Put 3 inches of water in your bathtub and float flowers such as roses.  This horizontal treatment for roses is preferred because complete submersion will cause the flowers to lose their natural texture. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist soft-petaled flower heads (such as irises, violet, and hydrangeas) to increase their water intake.  This helps prevent fading and shriveling. Fill a tall, long-necked bottle with tepid water and flower preservative.  Put your stem into this bottle (after re cutting the stem) to allow the flower to drink through the entire length of the stem.  This works with soft-stemmed flowers such as gerberas.

These are just some of the many tricks you can do to revive your flowers.  Hopefully these tips will help you through any hurdles you may encounter as you make your own wedding flowers.
